Is there a really a housing crisis or is it a people crisis?

Haha this was a good one Orny. Nice hat by the way, where did you get that?

I think I got that hat in Bemidgi , MN at a gas station... and just knew I HAD TO HAVE IT. And I was right... it looks stellar on camera.

I think that's the motto in Minnesota... isn't it on their state flag? Anyway, total agreement on the housing thing. The cold, hard reality is that most of us are all one car accident away from total financial obliteration (I know, I just had one last Tuesday--unfortunately my vehicle DIDN'T get totaled, which would've actually been a good thing for my bank account). Before you buy a house, ask yourself: if I lose my job, get hurt, have a fire, make a bad purchase, etc., am I going to be able to keep up with my obligations? If the answer is no, hedge your bets. Get a crappy apartment for a few years and shut the hell up.

Orny, when are you coming to Toronto? Have you been back to Montreal since the days of 'Comedian'?

So they are going to voluntarily ruin their credit because they aren't making money on the home? That's retarded. What's more retarded is that they went on TV and told everyone that this is what they were going to do. I guess it's newsworthy because this warped logic is probably quite common.

My husband has to harass people at their homes and jobs everyday to find out why they are behind on their mortgage/car payment/credit card/whatever. You wouldn't believe some of the responses he gets. People are retarded.

Just firing off the top of my head, Orny….but I don't think this video represents the majority of the family who are impacted by this housing crisis. I think 60 minutes picked out the rednecks of the group. I would say it is a crisis considering there were 223.538 foreclosures in September of last year and 250,000 more expected in December. That is per family. That is more people than you have fans on MySpace. And it isn't an easy process and it is a very demoralizing process. I don't think anyone intends to default on a loan whether it be car or home. Well, I am sure there are some who are irresponsible but for the most part I believe people work hard and get paid crap for what they do. Or they lose their jobs. The unemployment rate is huge right now. We all make some bad investments or we have too much hope and faith in job security….We all want to live a better life. But more and more people are just trying to live. Have you ever thought …"Oh my gosh, which bill can I not pay without having something shut off." You think people want to live that way? Really? The majority of people are not debating on whether to make their mortgage payment or buy the next Britney Spears album. That is not reality. I'm sorry your investments are hit by the lowering of the interest rates but the creditors and brokers are sucking people in with these great offers and to be honest…who is benefiting from it…The rich. This is just helping fuel their spending…They are getting a bargain. Now you can buy that Hummer at rock bottom price..Oh it also may help people save their houses. What a shame. That is just my point of view.

Good points, Katie. I didn't really get from the video that Orny was in any way really referring to those hard-working families who *want* to meet all their obligations but can't always do so. Yeah, I know, the title and all, but some things I chalk up to comedy and don't take too literally. At least that's how I look at it. I think the video was more about its entire content than what the title alone said. Hey, I know what it's like to play "robbing Peter to pay Paul" ... we only finally got out of debt last year, it took pretty much a decade to do so, and it is just such a relief to have that ball and chain gone. We were really stupid in our first years of marriage when it came to finances. Now things are looking up, and I remember times it looked like they never would, with creditors breathing down our necks, but hey, bottom line in our case was, we got ourselves in that mess.
My dear late dad tried to warn me way back when, but I didn't listen. We're still not at the point where we can go out and even think of buying a house, but at least we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and now there's hope that in the next eight or ten years, we'll be able to manage a house payment. Other than that, we do not EVER plan on getting into any debt ever again.

Yes, I agree Barb! There is definitely humor in that video. I just got upset that 60 minutes would choose to highlight this couple as an example of the housing crisis. I don't think it does justice by any means. It just makes them look like idiots. I am sure Katie Couric would have used a better example.

katie, I can't say I'm all that surprised that they would go with such an extreme example. Somebody probably thought it'd be "good tv".
I do think it's wonderful to know that this couple found each other; Cupid's arrow hit the mark here ... they deserve each other. On the other hand, I doubt it'll last, since they seem to have a problem with keeping commitments. I didn't see the piece on air ... is this a married couple, or are they shackin' up? lol

Okay, I can breathe now. LMAO! First of all I nominate Orny Adams to replace Andy Rooney effective immediately. At first I thought the footage was a put on. You're right Steph, it's mind boggling that couple agreed to pay a whopping $355,000 for that shack from "The Jerk." Put a dunce cap on that dude and one are her too for marrying him. "You! You! You!" with the synchronized zooming was a masterstroke. "You're ruining my country with this logic!" LOL. I also got a kick out of the stupid look on their faces juxtaposed with Orny's incredulous facial reactions.
